The enhanced image of the carving of a hilted dagger and axehead on 53 were created digitally using Picture Window Pro 3.1 as described below.

The original picture was taken with a Canon Powershot G5 5-megapixel camera at a distance of 35m (114ft), which is as close as possible given the restrictions on the public at Stonehenge.
The image was cropped and heavily sharpened to enhance the edges.
The sharpened image was equalized to balance the brightness across the range (color space HSV V, amount 71%)
Two further images were obtained from the equalized image.
Left: High contrast (amount 100%, threshold 81%)
Right: Embossed (radius 0.4, light angle 225°, height 3.8)
The two images were composed (30/100). Compare this with the laser scans by Wessex Archaeology / Archaeoptics Ltd.
